Local
265 offers welding classes to apprentices and journeymen. We cover Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), commonly referred
to as stick welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), commonly referred to as mig welding, and Gas Tungsten Arc
Welding (GTAW), referred to as tig welding.
Our facility has 20 welding booths, and is an American Welding Society
Accredited Test Welding facility.
Our
apprentices begin welding classes in their second year of training.
They receive 25 hours of classroom instruction and hands on welding,
concentrating on stick welding. Third
year apprentices receive 25 hours of training, they cover stick and mig welding.
Fourth year apprentices also have 25 hours of training concentrating on
mig welding. By the fifth year,
apprentices receive 30 hours of training, using tig welding and must achieve an
AWS welding certification in a welding process. As a graduate, the apprentice should with
confidence setup and safely operate welding machines for GMAW, SMAW, and GTAW.
The apprentice will also hold a certification in at least one process of
welding.
The welding instructor is David St. Peter.
David has been a sheet metal worker since 1989, when he started his first
year apprenticeship with Local 265. During
his apprenticeship, David was a contender in our Regional Apprentice Contest
during his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th
year. He went on to the National
Apprenticeship Contest during his 3rd year of apprenticeship.
David has been here at Local 265 as an instructor for more than 1 year
now. He teaches our 2nd
through 5th year apprentices welding subjects that include SMAW, GMAW,
and GTAW. He also handles other
subjects as well, including Sheet Metal Layout, Computer Layout, Drafting, and
Sheet Metal Math. David also
coordinates our journeyman welding certification and training program that
teaches our journeymen and certifies them in various welding disciplines.
David holds the titles of a Certified Welding Inspector, (CWI), Certified
Welding Educator (CWE), and he is also test supervisor for welder certification
testing.
In
September of 2000, welding classes began for Journeymen.
John Daniel is our most recent addition to our full time instructor staff. He has been with local 265 since 1991. As a fourth year apprentice, he competed in our NTF regional contest. Since then, he has become a certified welder and carries a universal CFC certification. John has furthered his education with a HVAC service course through Joliet Junior College. There he has recently completed their 3 dimensional AutoCAD 2000 program.
John’s background includes: residential installation, small and large commercial projects and shop fabrication. Over the past 3 years he has been the shop foreman for a large commercial shop. Since September of 2000, he has been our night welding instructor. Now he is teaching our apprentices in shop layout, drafting, math, welding and AutoCAD. His versatility and ability will certainly complement our outstanding staff.
