AUTOCAD CLASSES

The Program

Local 265’s computer program uses AutoDesk’s AutoCAD program as a tool to learn computer basics, sheet metal layout, field measuring, print reading, and the creation shop drawings.  Our facility offers two computer labs that support our 38 computer stations.  All computers use Windows XP operating system and are networked through two servers.  We are currently teaching AutoCAD 2005 but we expect to load 2006 in the next few months.  We are on a subscription program through AutoDesk that allows us to stay up to date with the current software release.  Our class rooms are supported by ceiling mounted projectors, laser printers, a d-size plotter, internet accessibility, and a well trained staff.

Apprentice Training

The computer program started back in October of 2000.  We started with 16 computers running windows 98 and AutoCAD 98LT.

We currently teach computers to 3rd, 4th, and 5th year apprentices.  They will receive over 100 hours of hands-on training.  The course objective is to teach; basic computer skills, AutoCAD’s software package, sheet metal layout, field measuring, print reading, and introduce the process of creating shop drawings.  Upon completion of the apprentice program, a graduate should have the skills needed to enter the detailing facet of the sheet metal industry.

Journeyman Training

Our AutoCAD night program is currently split into two separate courses, AutoCAD 101 and AutoCAD 102.

            AutoCAD 101

This course is designed for an entry level student.  Basic computer knowledge is helpful but not required.  You will learn file management, windows interface, and the fundamentals of AutoCAD.  The course will be very challenging and rewarding.  The class meets once a week for 15 weeks.  There are homework assignments, in class assignments and a final project to complete the course.  We use a text book named ”AutoCAD for Tinners” written by John Daniel to support our class.

            AutoCAD 102

This course is designed for more advanced users.  Completion of AutoCAD 101, Passing AutoCAD 101’s final, or instructors consent is required.  The focus of the course will be detailing.  Time will be spent learning advanced commands, scale dependency, plotting in model and paper space, shop drawing requirements, and print reading. The class meets once a week for 15 weeks.  There are homework assignments, in class assignments and a final project to complete the course.  We use a text book named ”AutoCAD for Tinners” written by John Daniel to support our class.

Johns continues to improve on his skills.  He is currently enrolled at Joliet Junior college , where he has already completed several courses including some service classes, and all of their AutoCAD programs. Some of his other qualifications are; Universal CFC, ICE, CWI, CWE and a certified welder.
